Have you ever heard tales about malevolent creatures manifesting as animals that serve witches and cunning folks during the Medieval period?

If so, then you should know that they are just speculations.

It is not just Spirits that reside in our realm, if that’s what you’re thinking. That would be too much of a bore.

​

You see, our world consists of similar elements that yours has. Like the existence of animals! You might be thinking our world offers magical and mystical creatures, but no, they are far from those. They are unicorns, pegasi, ferocious-looking griffins, or any of those mythological beasts that mortals made you fantasize as a child. What we have here come in the form of natural animals. However, dear mortal, ne'er shall be fooled by their mere appearance.

Our creatures are not like those that wander aimlessly on the grounds of your world. Ours are way more sharp-witted, more tenacious, and perhaps a bit more ravening—towards unruly spirits, that is. (Although humans can, too, be quite tempting.)

We call them:

familiars

​

These animal familiars, treated as pets and companions, are spiritual creatures with agency, whose main purpose is to aid us, Specters, in every haunting and expedition we may partake, especially when we are called upon by The Order. They serve as a point of intersection between the Mortal World and the Afterlife, orchestrating a relationship between the material actions of the Specter and the supernatural origins of their abilities. They also come in the form of any natural animal so as to not overwhelm the mortals who come across them.

There are those who say they are cursed devilish entities, others describe them as beings with a penchant for demonic trickery and temptation. Some even say they are the souls of those who suffered from oppression during their lifetime but were nevertheless condemned to suffer in the throes of our world. What a cruel fate, isn’t it? But enough of the gossip now, we respect them enough not to extort their secrets.

 

Nonetheless, both our energies being synchronized is indicative of the familiars' affinity and loyalty. We only have to keep our bond strong so that the rest shall be conquerable.
